Biblical Dirges (WhenBloodFlows)
Good whatever time of the day it is where ever it is you are. Like joke like joke we are entering the “merry seasons” of the year. First thanks giving and them Christmas. Personally I am seeing it as a way for corporations to make a shit ton of money around the seasons cheers lmao… but hey… we all love the holidays don’t we?
In this fast paced life that some of us have no choice than to live, the holidays provide some respite and gives us the opportunity to go back to the foundations that matter. LOVE and fellowship with loved ones. For some (my ex-life) it was an opportunity to make a lil more $$$ cos you get paid more for working during this time of the year. Nonetheless, we are entering this season starting with thanksgiving.
Now when I immigrated to North America, I was told that thanksgiving was a holiday for eating turkey. My very first thanksgiving, I cooked that turkey and LET ME TELL YOU.. that shit slaaapppppeeedddddddddd. Anywho fast forward, in my reckoning with my blackness and marginalization as a Black woman in America, I learned that Thanksgiving was so much deeper than the shit about turkeys or the popular tale of Christopher F***ing Columbus “discovering” America.
Underneath the merriment and celebrations lay a bloody truth. The massacre of a people on whose land I am currently inhabiting. How many people know this? How many people actually understand the implications of this? Bloodshed and a whole ass genocide occurred and we are out here commemorating the “discovery” of America by some entitled white dude? NAAAHHHH BRUH.
To complicate things further, the tenets of colonization as western imperial move fucked up anyone not Western and white and my behind sure is NOT white. Many of us belong to communities that suffer bloodshed as a symptom of the western colonial disease. Just a year ago, blood flowed in Nigeria 🇳🇬 when the youth rose to try to deal with a symptom of the colonial disease. For this I wrote an ode. Do not forget to listen to it below.
While y’all get ready to jolly and merry (and possibly end up broke after the holidays 😂😂), I evoke discernment for us all as we find ways to work towards eradicating this colonial disease at its root.
